PICK 3
In order to win a Pick 3 bet you are required to select the winning horse in three consecutive races. Most tracks only offer one or two pick 3 opportunities per day. Some tracks offer a rolling pick 3 in which every race is part of a pick 3 bet, which means that some races are included in three pick 3 bets. The third race for example, would be the third race of the first pick 3, the second race of the second pick 3, and the first race of the third pick 3. I don't mean to make this seem complicated, it is really very simple. The simplest pick 3 bet is the $2 straight pick 3. If for example, you picked the #2 horse to win the first race, the #4 horse to win the second race, and the #6 horse to win the third race, you would tell the clerk ($2 pick 3 - 2, 4, 6).
Types of Horse Racing Bets
Straight Bets Quinella Trifecta Daily Double Superfecta Exacta Pick 3 and Pick 6Pick 3 Part Wheel
The pick 3 part wheel bet is favorite play at the track. It
allows you to single your favorite horses in some races and combining
them with several good paying horses in other races in an attempt
to hit a good paying win ticket. There is generally good value in
the pick 3 bet, and frequently they will pay considerably more than
the comparable amount of money bet in a 3 race parlay.
To increase the probability of winning a pick 3 you may want to play
multiple combinations by
selecting more than one horse in one or more of
the three races. The easiest way to communicate
this bet to the clerk is
to use the pick 3 part wheel bet. If you think the #3 horse will win the
first
race of the pick 3 and either the (#1, #5 or #7) horse will win
the second race, and the (#2, #5, #8, #10, or #12) horse will win the
third race, you would tell the clerk ($2 Pick 3 Part Wheel 3 with 1, 5,
7 with 2, 5, 8, 10, 12). The cost of this bet would be (1 x 3 x 5 x $2)
= $30 for your $2 bet. You can bet any amount from $1 on up. Remember,
that if you bet a $1 bet, you only collect 1/2 of the
payoff amount
since most bets are quoted for a $2 bet.

Pick 6
This wager requires the player to select the winner
of six consecutive races prior to the first
race of the pick six. Some tracks place the pick six as the first six races,
the middle six races, or the
last six races. Many tracks have carry over pools for the pick six that can grow
to as high as a
million dollars.
Pick 3 and Pick 6 Strategy
Win 3's and Pick 6's are the wagers that are fun and also take a while before you find out whether you win or lose since these races consist of more than one race. Unless you get knocked out in the first leg, then it is not much fun. You do have a chance at winning even if you lose. How is that, you ask? Some times there will be no one that has correctly wagered on the combination of wagers. This means a Win 3 could pay for 2 out of 3 correct winners and Pick 6's also pay for 5 out of 6 winners if no one has correctly picked all 6 winners. Here are a few popular ways to bet these combinations.
Pick 3
Example: $1.00 Win 3 #1, #2, #3 with / # 1 with / #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 cost $15.00. The #1, #2, or #3 must win the first leg, the #1 must win the second leg, and the #1, #2, #3, #4, or #5 must win the third leg.
You may add as many horses in each race as you think is needed to win your wager. Remember, the more horses, the more expensive the bet. Some wagers will cost more then the actual payout. What do you mean? If all the favorite horses happen to win the payout will be small. Meaning if you took 5 horses in first leg, 2 horses in the second leg, and 5 horses in the third leg. This ticket would cost $50.00 for a $1.00 ticket. The payoff for a $1.00 Win 3 could be $18.00 you end up winning, but lose $32.00.
The Pick 6
It works the same as the Win 3s the only difference is you must select the winners in 6 consecutive races and the more horses you have in each ticket the price goes up very quickly. If you can possibly find a couple of key horses it will keep the cost of the ticket down. Remember those key horses must win.
Example: $ 1.00 Pick 6 #1 with / #2 with / #3 with / #8 with / # 3 with / #2, #6 cost $2.00. The # 1 must win the first leg, # 2 must win the second leg, #3 must win the third leg, # 8 must win the fourth leg, the #3 must win the fifth leg, the #2 or #6 must win the last leg.
If you decide to play 2 horses in each leg of the Pick 6 the cost for a $1.00 ticket would be $64.00. 2 (horses) x 2 (horses) x 2(h) x 2(h) x 2(h) x 2(h) = 64 different combinations x $1.00 = $64.00.
Tip: If you can find 2 or 3 Key horses and add extra horses in other legs this will increase your chances at winning.
Example: $1.00 Pick 6 #1, #2 ,#3 with / #9 with / # 2 with / #2, #5, #6 with / # 5 with / #7, #4, #8 cost $27.00 In this example there is 3 key horses they must win. The 3 other legs there is 3 horses, of those horses in each leg one of those must win.
