Jose Santos started racing in professional circuit at 14 in his native land. He rode in Florida in early 1984; moved to New York in 1985; won four consecutive national money titles – 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1989; and clipped the Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey in 1988. Santos moved to California after the 1990 Belmont fall meet; returned to New York in July 1991; fractured his right arm and collarbone on July 13, 1992; resumed riding on December 1, 1992; clinched individual meet titles at Saratoga, Belmont, Aqueduct, Gulfstream, Hialeah and Calder. He won the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with Funny Cide; received ESPN’s 2003 ESPY Award as outstanding jockey; posted 4000th career win riding Melodeeman in the fifth race at Aqueduct on February 4, 2006.
