Thomas McCarthy has been involved in racing on a tiny scale. He only trains General Quarters. His grandfathe r was a famous jockey from Ireland. Thomas McCarthy has a degree in biology, served in the United States Army, pursued a career in education teaching science. Eventually , he served as principal of Seneca, Durrett and Valley High Schools in Louisville , Kentucky before retiring in 1990. Agent of jockey Julien Leparoux, Steve Bass was his pupil. He owned and trained horses throughout his time in education. General Quarters is the most successful colt he owned and trained. In 2007 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, he bid on General Quarters but bowed out once the bidding reached $20,000. In 2008, General Quarters entered 20,000 maiden claiming race at Churchill Downs. McCarthy claimed the colt he had set eyes on. He spends time grooming the horses.
