The Jockey Cup Gold Cup is a thoroughbred flat horseracing event that is run annually at the historic Belmont Park. This grade I race is open to horses aged three and up and capable of racing one and quarter miles on the left handed dirt track. This racing is considered as one of the important events of the Belmont Park. It has often been seen that the horses that have done well in this stakes is sure to perform well in the United States Triple Crown. Earlier, the Jockey Club Gold Cup used to known as the Jockey Club Stakes. With the introduction of Breeders’ Cup racing event, the status of the Jockey Club Gold Cup is fading a little bit — but the glory and popularity of this racing event has forced the horse racing grading committee to give it grade I status. At present, it carries a purse of $750,000 and is run at a distance of one and one four miles on the left-handed dirt track of the Belmont Park. Since the inauguration of this race, it has been running in various distances: between 1976 and 1989 it was run at one and half miles, but from 1921 thorough 1975 the distance was two miles long. In the middle – between 1958 and 1974 except for 1962 and 1968, the race took place at Aqueduct Racetrack instead of Belmont.
