The Spinaway Stakes is an American grade I horseracing event that is run annually at the historic Saratoga Race Course, New York. This race is open to thoroughbred fillies with an age two year old and capable of racing seven furlongs on the dirt track. The race was first run in 1881 and is going to held for the 117th times in 2008. Due to Second World War, the race was shifted to the Belmont Park and was held for three consecutive years – in 1943, 1944 and 1945. The race was not run from 1892 to 1900 and again in 1911 and 1912. The Spinaway Stakes has been running in various distances since the inauguration – it was set at five furlongs before 1901 and then it was set at five and half furlongs from 1901 to 1922. The distance of the race was six furlongs from 1922 to 1993 while the distance changed to seven furlongs in 1994.
