Meadowlands Racetrack History

An Opening Day crowd of 42,133 streamed in as harness racing on a mile track made its debut in the metropolitan area in 1976. Nighttime harness racing was an immediate hit in New Jersey and racing was about to change for the better - and for the bettor. Rambling Willie took the opening night feature in 1:553. The Hambletonian, one of the trotting events of the world, was transferred to the Meadowlands in 1981. In 1987, August 8th, Mack Lobell ran impressively with his driver John Campbell. In 1992, a completely new format was introduced for Hambletonian race and Alf Palema and Mickey McNichol swept the big prizes in an upset. Hall of Fame driver John Campbell reached an unprecedented achievement in 2000.
