Notes: Cigar is a Hall of Fame thoroughbr ed racehorse that has its origin and developmen t in the North American horseracin g circuit. He became the first American racehorse both in 1995 and in 1996 by snatching victories sixteen races in a row since the Triple Crown winner Citation did it in 1948 and 1950. He is also regarded as the all time leading money earner among the North American thoroughbr ed horses. Interestin gly, he did not take part in any races while he was two years old and debuted at three under the trainer Alex Hassinger. He finished second in the Grade III Volante Handicap at the Oak Tree Racing Associatio n fall meeting at Santa Anita and third in the Grade III Ascot Handicap at Bay Meadows. In the next year, Cigar finished third at Saratoga Racecourse and also at Belmont Park. When he entered into four, Cigar finished up with two wins in six starts and earned lump-sum amount. Cigar attempted to surpass Citation in the Pacific Classic at Delmar Thoroughbr ed Cub near San Diego, California . Though he lost the last two races of his career, his race record was sufficient to earn him second straight champion older male and Horse of the Year honor. He was retired to stud service at the end of the 1996-racin g season.
