Colonial Downs History

Colonial Downs was opened on 1st September 1997 and attracted more than 13,000 viewers on the opening day itself. Though the track is one of the largest in the country, its clubhouse is comparatively smaller. OTB was built prior to opening of the track. There was a plan to make a deal with Maryland for stopping Maryland racing during Colonial Down\\\'s thoroughbred meet.

Until 2005, the Maryland Jockey Club managed the track under an agreement with Virginia and Maryland regulators and the Maryland-Virginia Racing Circuit. The track has been successful and has offered good summertime turf racing in the traditionally poor three-year-old turf division. The track ran two legs of the Jacobs Investment\\\'s Grand Slam of Grass in 2005. This event consisted of the Colonial Turf Cup and the Virginia Derby from Colonial Downs, the Secretariat Stakes from Arlington Park and the Breeders\\\' Cup Turf.

How to get there:

From Richmond, you need to take I 64 East, Exit 214, (25 miles east of Richmond) and turn right at the bottom of ramp, now turn left on Colonial Downs Pkwy. Move forward 300 yards on left and you will reach the main entrance, which is nearly 1/4 mile on the left. You can take Route 60 east, turn left on Route 155 in Providence Forge, now turn right on Colonial Downs Pkwy, which is nearly 3 miles from Rt. 60, move forward ¼ mile on left and you will get the main entrance. If you come from Williamsburg, you need to take I 64 West, Exit 214, (20 miles west of Williamsburg), turn left at the bottom of ramp, turn left on Colonial Downs Pkwy, which is 600 yards on left and the main entrance would be nearly 1/4 mile on the left. You can come through Route 60 west, turn right on Rt. 155 in Providence Forge, again turn right on Colonial Downs Pkwy that is nearly 3 miles from Rt. 60. You will find main entrance 1/4 mile on left.
