Monmouth Park History

The Monmouth Park Racetrack was set in motion in 1870 on the site of Fort Monmouth parade ground. Initially, it was decided that thoroughbred flat-horseracing would be the prime importance in this racetrack. Within a short period, Monmouth earned popularity in pari-mutuel gambling. But, legislation barred pari-mutuel gambling in 1894 and the glorious days at Monmouth gradually ceased to be visible. Nearly fifty years after, the law went in favor of horse racing and the state legislature passed a bill in 1946.

The Monmouth Park started betting again from June 19, 1946. In 1986, The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority purchased Monmouth Park from its previous owners, the Monmouth Park Jockey Club. Monmouth Park\\\'s marquee event is the Haskell Invitational Handicap, named after Amory L. Haskell, who ran for the first time in 1986 as a handicap and was asked to participate into an Invitational Handicap in 1981. Monmouth Park showcased the Jersey Derby at Garden State Park until its closure in 2001. 2007 Breeder\\\'s Cup kicked off on 26th October at the historic tracks of Monmouth Park Racecourse.
