The WinStar Derby is held in the first week of April every year at dirt track of the historic Sunland Park in New Mexico. The 1 and 1/8 mile racing meet is entitled for thoroughbred horses of three year olds. WinStar Stud of Kentucky officially sponsors the WinStar Derby. Many renowned riders started their career in this field including Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey and Mike E. Smith. In 2007, Sunland Park experienced all time record crowd of 16,284 fans. It was a career best performance of the local runner Song of Navarone. Notable performance: In 2007 Song of Navarone clocked 1:49 to clinched winning title of The WinStar Derby; Wanna Runner posted win in 2006 while Thor's Echo did the same in 2005. Hi Teck Man rolled well in 2004 to set victory for his owner and Excessivepleasure grabbed the title in 2003. Above Perfection ran superbly to register a win in 2002 WinStar Derby.
