National Handicapping Tournament Runs Through Sunday - Posted on January 28, 2022

By Noel Michaels The NTRA’s National Horseplayers Championship (NHC) opens Friday in Las Vegas for the 23rd time with the finals set through Sunday (Jan. 28-30). The NHC handicapping tournament is the culmination of a yearlong series of contests that crowns the next Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Handicapper. The event also will award purse money approaching $3 million. The NHC returns to its normal spot on the calendar at Bally’s Las Vegas, which will host for third year in a row. The 2020 event was held in February, just weeks before the Covid-19 outbreak. The 2021 edition of the

Baffert Saddles Trio in San Vicente Stakes - Posted on January 28, 2022

By Margaret Ransom In years past, the San Vicente Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita was considered an important stop on the road to the Kentucky Derby (G1). Even though 2016 winner Nyquist went on to win the Kentucky Derby, the race has become the track’s forgotten sophomore feature. Maybe its decline as a being considered a legit Derby prep is because of the quality of recent runners, the 7-furlong distance, or because of its date on the calendar. Nonetheless, it’s hard to overlook the slew of good horses who have won the San Vicente. In addition to Nyquist, other notable

Derby Prep: Newgrange, Dash Attack Top Southwest Stakes Field   - Posted on January 28, 2022

By Margaret Ransom The 57th running of the Southwest Stakes (G3) returns to Oaklawn Park in its regular spot as the Rebel Stakes (G2) prep on Saturday, a year after it was delayed nearly two weeks due to a winter storm. The race drew a full field of 12, including Smarty Jones (G3) winner Dash Attack and a pair from California trained by Phil D’Amato (Don’tcrossthedevil) and Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who sends out 2-1 favorite Newgrange. In the previous 56 runnings, only Smarty Jones in 2004 made it to the winner’s circle after the Kentucky Derby. But a

2022 Pegasus World Cup Profiles - Posted on January 27, 2022

Profiles of the nine horses entered for the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. The profiles were compiled by usracing.com contributors Ed McNamara, Jenny Kellner, Margaret Ransom and Ray Wallin. 1 KNICKS GO By Ed McNamara A thoroughbred’s greatest weapon is early speed, which this flashy front-runner flaunted in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He blew open the race immediately, blasting a quarter-mile in 45 3/5 seconds while daring his overmatched opponents to keep up. Nobody could, and the gray streak was long gone. He had never run 1 1/4 miles before, but it didn’t

Eddie Mac’s Book: Handicapping Pegasus Day; Knicks Go in World Cup; Never Surprised in Turf - Posted on January 27, 2022

By Ed McNamara Like many front-runners, Knicks Go is an all-or-nothing proposition. As a 2-year-old, he wired the Breeders‘ Futurity by 5 1/2 lengths at odds of 70-1 and ran second at 40-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Then the potential star turned into a nobody, losing his next nine races. Out of desperation, owner Korea Racing Authority replaced Ben Colebrook with Brad Cox, which has worked out well. After going 2-for-14 for Colebrook, Knicks Go became a world-beater. The 6-year-old gray streak is 8-for-10 under Cox, one of America’s elite trainers, and will be voted Horse of the Year

2022 Pegasus World Cup Profile: Endorsed - Posted on January 26, 2022

In the days leading up to the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, usracing.com is publishing profiles of the horses in the race set for Saturday, Jan. 29. By Jenny Kellner How does a horse with a 15-race losing streak get invited to a $3 million race? Maybe because Endorsed flashed some promising form way back when he was a 3-year-old. However, it seems a second-place finish in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector last out at Gulfstream on Dec. 11 was enough, what with some other much better older horses choosing not
