Memories of the Diana Stakes and How to Bet It in 2018 - Posted on July 20, 2018

The Diana (G1), as is true of most Saratoga stakes races, has a great history and a stellar list of winners. I have seen several of them live. The great Shuvee won the Diana back-to-back in 1970 and ‘71. I was there for both. It is hard to imagine with today’s format, but, in 1982, I saw them split the race and run it in two divisions. Jockey Eric Beita, who was tragically murdered by someone he offered a lift to while driving back from riding out of town a few years afterwards, won both split divisions with If Winter Comes and

Monomoy Girl Is on Her Way to Greatness - Posted on July 20, 2018

In all sports, greatness is defined in many different ways, often with championships. With the Breeders’ Cup World Championships just a mere three months away, this is the time of year where horse racing’s most talented horses begin to emerge on the road to the year-end Championships. When I think of a champion, I think of versatility and character: Versatility being the ability to adapt to different situations and character being the ability to overcome adversity. One filly who is well on her way to being a champion is Monomoy Girl. Monomoy Girl has been nothing but spectacular since she

Accelerate Favored to Repeat in Del Mar’s San Diego Handicap - Posted on July 20, 2018

Nine will go to the gate for Saturday’s $200,000 San Diego Handicap (GII), the traditional prep for the Pacific Classic in a month’s time and a rare event for the older male runner division in that horse are assigned varying weights. While this year’s field doesn’t have the hype of North America’s richest racehorse making an appearance like last year’s did, a solid field of older horses will head to the gate in the 1 1/16-mile feature over Del Mar’s main track. The weather in Solana Beach is expected to be typically beautiful on Saturday, with afternoon highs in the

Five Quick Tips for a More Successful Saratoga - Posted on July 20, 2018

Saratoga is the most important meet of the summer season for horseplayers. The highly anticipated 40-day Saratoga racing season lasts throughout the heart of the summer, running six days a week (every day except Tuesday) from Friday, July 20 until Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3. If you are a serious horseplayer and you are not already looking forward to the Saratoga meet, it might be time to check your pulse, because Saratoga is the summer place to be for all handicappers and horse racing aficionados alike. Saratoga’s biggest day is, of course, Travers Day on Saturday, Aug. 25, which figures

Oceanside Stakes Opening-Day Feature at Del Mar - Posted on July 19, 2018

As it typically does, the Oceanside Stakes drew a full field on opening day at Del Mar on Wednesday. Here is a look at the main contenders: 2-TEXAS WEDGE (9-2) has met the Brisnet speed figure par for this race in four of his five starts, but has yet to win around two turns — or even try. In fact, his longest win came at 5 ½ furlongs on the dirt and, given his subpar late speed rations (LSRs), I’ll look elsewhere for the winner, but keep this guy in the exotics mix. 3-PEPE TONTO (20-1) ran well in his

Del Mar Set to Open for 79th Season Of Racing by the Sea - Posted on July 18, 2018

A 10-race card, led by the traditional opening-day feature — the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes for sophomore turf runners — kicks off the 2018 meet at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Solana Beach, California, on Wednesday. The track, where the turf literally meets the surf, was built by Hollywood legend Bing Crosby with his pals, fellow actors Pat O’Brien, Gary Cooper, Joe E. Brown, Oliver Hardy and car dealer/leading thoroughbred owner Charles Howard (of Seabiscuit fame). Del Mar opened its gates for the first time on July 3, 1937, and has been the West Coast summer sanctuary for racing fans
