Gold Cup, Norfolk Highlight Royal Ascot Day 3 - Posted on June 19, 2019

Of the six races set for Royal Ascot on Thursday, the nearly 2 ½-mile Gold Cup (GI) is the main attraction and the lone Group 1 on the day. The race, formerly known as the Ascot Gold Cup but renamed to Gold Cup in honor of Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday in 2016, is probably Europe’s most prestigious event for “stayers” or horses who like to run marathon distances. Since U.S. racing doesn’t support distance races like the Gold Cup outside of steeplechasing, it’s a bit of a foreign event and a rare treat for American racing fans. The rainy weather

Ellis Park: New Owners, Record Purses and Promises of Major Improvements - Posted on June 19, 2019

Ellis Park is one popping racetrack heading into summer, offering record purses, enticing top trainers and jockeys to stick around for the season, and this week being sold for $11 million to Ellis Entertainment LLC, which says it plans to invest $55 million into a major overhaul of 97-year-old facility in Henderson, Kentucky. What a few wild and crazy months it’s been for a track overshadowed by iconic Churchill Downs in Louisville, and elegant Keeneland Race Course in Lexington. But Ellis Park is stepping up its game for what could become a memorable season for the track located just south

Prince of Wales’s Highlights Royal Ascot Day Two - Posted on June 18, 2019

The rainy conditions in England will continue at least through the morning hours on Wednesday, so for day two at Royal Ascot the ground will more than likely continue to have some give in it. The feature on the second day of the meet is the Prince of Wales’s Stakes (GIT), a 1 ¼-mile event named in 1892 for the Prince of Wales and now run in honor of the current titleholder, Charles. There was no race during World War II when there was no Prince of Wales, but it was resurrected in 1968, a year before Charles was given

Let’s Get the Breeders’ Cup to Saratoga - Posted on June 16, 2019

It has been quite a year for horse racing. It began with equine fatalities at Santa Anita Park.  At present, there have been 29. In May and June, we witnessed what can be surmised as an interesting Triple Crown season.  We saw Maximum Security “win” the Kentucky Derby, only to get disqualified; we saw the jockeyless Bodexpress run wildly at the Preakness and then we saw the unheralded horse with the cool name, Sir Winston, win the Belmont at 10-1 odds. We will head to summer with everything in the air. For Santa Anita, their winter-spring meet can’t end soon
