The Lineup: Del Mar’s Turf Festival, Churchill’s Clark Top Holiday Stakes - Posted on November 26, 2021

By Richard Rosenblatt Del Mar’s Turf Festival closes out the track’s fall meeting over this holiday weekend, ending a successful run that began with the 36th Breeders’ Cup in early November. Starting Friday, Del Mar features six graded stakes on the turf, including a pair of Grade 1s – the Hollywood Derby on Saturday and the Matriarch Stakes on Sunday. The other turf stakes at Del Mar are the Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) on Friday, the Seabiscuit Handicap (G2) and the Jimmy Durante Stakes (G3) on Saturday, and the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes (G3) on Sunday. Atticus: A Rescue Horse of a Special Sort - Posted on November 26, 2021

Margaret Ransom is an award-winning writer who has worked in the horse racing industry for decades who recently moved to Texas from California and started The Bridge Sanctuary. Its mission is to bridge the gap from forgotten horses to forever safe horses. Here’s her latest rescue story. By Margaret Ransom I want to tell you all about Atticus. Even though Atticus is nothing special by thoroughbred industry standards, he happens to be special to me and all of us here at The Bridge. So far, almost all the critters who have passed through the gates here have been relatively easy;

Eddie Mac’s Book: A Nod To Maxfield at Churchill; Chad Brown Looking Good at Del Mar - Posted on November 25, 2021

By Ed McNamara There’s always a hangover after the Breeders’ Cup, the final exam for horseplayers. If you did well, you have happy memories. If not, like me, you soured on the game temporarily. As Frank Sinatra sang in “My Way”: “Regrets, I have a few.” Here’s why I’ve been beating myself up lately. After obsessively researching the turf races, I spoke with my friend Craig, also a connoisseur of grass racing. He mentioned there was a Saturday pick 4 linking the Turf Sprint, Filly & Mare Turf, Mile and Turf. “This is right up our alley,” he said. No

Don’t Be An Egomaniac! 4 Steps to Overcome Ego at the Track - Posted on November 25, 2021

By Ray Wallin It feels good to win. It feels bad to lose. Your ego will either make you feel like a success or an utter failure. Spending time thinking either way is a surefire way to lose money at the track. When we lose and see others win, we are often resentful that someone else figured the race correctly and we didn’t. When we win, we think we are smarter than the next handicapper. In our minds it is a criticism of our handicapping. Where there is criticism, there is a reaction. Regardless of winning or losing, the reaction

Fall Racing’s Last Hurrah at the Big A, Churchill, Del Mar - Posted on November 23, 2021

By Noel Michaels The table is set for a high-quality fall season finale beginning with the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Some top tracks will be serving up extra helpings of great racing, including Aqueduct, Churchill Downs and Del Mar. These three tracks will keep running through early December, which makes it easier for horseplayers to narrow their focus to these three simulcast signals. Of course, there are other tracks you may have a personal preference for as Tampa Bay Downs at the Fair Grounds are opening their winter meets, and Gulfstream Park begins its championship season on Dec. 4, with the

The Farrell Report: Giving Thanks to Horse Racing - Posted on November 23, 2021

By Mike Farrell Thanksgiving is here again, that time when we pause to acknowledge our many blessings. There are multiple reasons for racing fans to reflect on this past season. We can all give thanks this for: Fans in the stands. Even though capacity was capped for many major stakes, it was reassuring to see people back in the seats and hear the cheers, and occasional jeers, from the grandstand. The game thrives on that give and take between the human and equine athletes on track and those with wagers on the outcome. May we never lose that again. The
