Aqueduct Cancels Saturday Horse Racing Card
January 31, 2015January went out like a lion for the New York Racing Association as cold temperatures combined with high winds forced officials to cancel Saturday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct.
Of the 23 cards scheduled for the month of January at Aqueduct, seven were completely canceled, including three of the five Saturday programs, while another was scrapped after two races were run.
Saturday’s card was lost due to temperatures in the low 20s combined with forecasted winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour that made for wind chills in the single digits. At 8 a.m., the temperature at JFK Airport was 14 degrees, with a wind chill of minus 5.
Aqueduct and Belmont Park were to be open Saturday for simulcasting. The $100,000 Ladies Handicap, scheduled for Saturday, has been rescheduled for Friday. The race will be open to original nominees and will be redrawn Sunday. Live racing was scheduled to resume Sunday with a nine-race card that begins at 12:45 p.m. Eastern. Another winter storm, bringing several inches of snow, is forecast but fortunately is not expected to start until Sunday night.
