Dortmund works toward San Antonio Stakes
January 24, 2016ARCADIA, Calif. – Dortmund, unraced since winning the Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar in November, worked six furlongs in 1:12 on Friday in preparation for the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 6.
According to Santa Anita clockers, Dortmund worked the first half-mile in 47.40 seconds and galloped out seven furlongs in 1:25.60. Trained by Bob Baffert, Dortmund missed training time because of a foot issue in December and has had three workouts this month. Baffert said Dortmund will benefit from Friday’s workout. “He needed it,” Baffert said. “The track is so deep. He was working. This will set him up for another work, and he’ll be ready.” Dortmund, 4, has won 8 of 10 starts and earned $1,712,480 for owner Kaleem Shah.
Imperative, second to California Chrome in the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes on Jan. 9, worked a half-mile in 46.40 seconds on Thursday for the San Antonio. “He went fast, and he did it easy,” trainer Richard Baltas said. Imperative, 6, has won 3 of 28 starts and earned $1,733,120. A gelding, Imperative races for Kenji Morinaga.
