Charles Whittingha m was an important trainer in the North American thoroughbr ed horseracin g circuit. He was born in San Diego, California and started working for the racehorses at a very young age. He worked as an assistant trainer to the Hall of Fame trainer Horatio Luro. His career was interrupte d as he was forced to work for the United States Marine Corps during the Second World War. When the war came to a halt, he returned to work as an assistant trainer until 1950. In this very year, he establishe d his own stable and won the race for the first time in 1953 with Llangollen ̢۪s Porterhous e and earned the US Two Year Old colt honors. During his forty-nine years of training, he had gathered two fifty two stakes wins and ultimately became the all-time leading trainer at both Hollywood Park Racetrack and Santa Anita Park. He won the title: Eclipse Award for Outstandin g Trainer in the US in 1971, 1982, and 1989 and US Champion Trainer by earnings seven times: 1970 to 1973, 1975, 1981 and 1982. In 1974, he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame and continued to train horses till he died at eighty-six . To pay tribute to this honored gentleman, Santa Anita Park has set up a bust of Whittingha m and his dog Toby at the paddock of the track.
