He is an American Hall of Fame thoroughbr ed horse trainer. He started his career as a trainer in 1979. He has won more than 240 graded stakes title. In 1986 he was recruited by Ogden Phillips to train the horses in his stable. In 1988 he won the Eclipse Award for Outstandin g Trainer within the United States. He won the Jockey Club Gold Cup and the Travelers Stakes for three times. He won the Belmont Stakes in 1989 and the Breeders̢ ۪ Cup for nine times. His Breeders̢ ۪ Cup wins have ranked him second after D. Wayne Lukas.
