Notes: Curlin is an American thoroughbr ed racehorse that was sired by Smart Strike and out of the mare Sheriffâ s Deputy. The name of this colt was taken from Charles Curlin, an African American slave, who fought for the Confederat e Army in the American Civil War. William Gallion and Shirley Cunningham Jr. bought Curlin and sold controllin g interest to others. Curlin snatched victory at Gulfstream Park in Florida by 12 Â lengths. At Oaklawn Park in Arkansas, jockey Robby Albarado rode him to victory in the Rebel Stakes and again earned victory in the Arkansas Derby. At the 133rd Kentucky Derby, Curlin was the front-line favorite and he was the second betting choice when the race started. Starting from post number 2 in a full field of twenty starters, Curlin finished third to Street Sense and Hard Spun. In the 132nd Preakness Stakes on May 19, 2007 the Kentucky Derby winner and favorite Street Sense was beaten comprehens ively by Curlin. In the 139th Belmont Stakes, Curlin was even money favorite in the Belmont Stakes. He engaged the champion filly â Rags to Riches, in a lengthy stretch duel and lost by a head.
