Notes: With the G1 Blue Grass S. now in the bag, Ken McPeek's versatile trainee is a stakes winner on synthetic and turf and graded stakes-pla ced on dirt from his solid 2 nd behind Verrazano in the G2 Tampa Bay Derby. His Blue Grass victory on 4/13 at Keeneland was easily the most impressive of his career, as the bay overcame a terrible start, lagged well behind, then circled the field to blow by 12 of his rivals and nail leader Palace Malice for a neck score. The bay stopped the clock in 1:50.27 and earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure. Already among the top 20 in the new Kentucky Derby points qualifying system, he picked up 100 more for a total of 122 and 4 th -place ranking on the current list of those eligible to run for the roses. With Julien Leparoux aboard for the 1 st time, the Blue Grass continued a tradition of slow starts by Java's War, including poor beginnings in the Tampa stakes, the G2 Jockey Club at Churchill Downs last fall when he checked in 6 th , and his victory in the grassy Sunday Silence S. at Louisiana Downs in September. He now owns a career record of 7-3-1-1 and a bankroll of $672,091. The colt is a homebred campaignin g for breeder/ow ner Charles Fipke. He became the 1 st winner for his sire, the late champion War Pass, when he won a 1m maiden grass race at Ellis Park last July. Java's War's dam is Java (GB), a winner who was most effective at routes on the grass. He was foaled on May 4, 2010, making this year's Kentucky Derby Day his actual birthday. Java's War will ship from Keeneland into one of McPeek's barns at Churchill Downs later in the week, most likely on 4/18.
