Louisiana Downs History

Louisiana Downs is located near Shreveport in Bossier City. It was inaugurated on October 30, 1974 in presence of 15,000 horseracing fans. In 1980, one of the most talked-about stakes of the area – Super Derby – attracted the best three-year-olds in the country. And that race was the richest ever for three-year-old thoroughbreds with a $500,000 purse. Belmont Stakes winner Temperence Hill won the inaugural Super Derby on October 18, 1980.
The prestigious Breeders\' Cup Classic and three Super Derby winners, Tiznow, Sunday Silence and Alysheba have been voted the Eclipse Award as Horse of the Year, the industry’s highest award. The track was purchased by Harrah\'s Entertainment in December 2002. Exciting Thoroughbred racing continued every day of the season and it attracted some of the country’s finest trainers and horses year after year. The track showcased Quarter Horse racing in the mid-November through mid-December 2004 and added another chapter in the Park’s history.
