Portland Meadows History

Portland Meadows opened its gates for horse racing on the fourteenth day of September 1946. In due course of time, the racetrack has made several changes and incorporated many facilities — the night racing facility is one of them. During 1948, the Vanport Flood deluged the town of Vanport resulting in huge damages to the track. Besides this, there have been several successes as also disastrous stories of Portland Meadows. It was in 1971, when the track faced a second disaster - a fire burned the grandstand to the ground. The Coors Portland Meadows Mile became the first $100,000 stakes race in 1987. The racing surface was completely renovated prior to 2001-2002 horse racing meets. At the same time, the clubhouse and Turf Club Restaurant were also refurbished and a new simulcast center was opened on the mainline level.
