Notes:
Secretaria
t is the
ninth US
Triple
Crown
winner and
the first
to win it
in 25
years. He
clocked
1:59 2/5
at the
Kentucky
Derby and
2:24 at
the
Belmont
Stakes,
which is
still –
standing
record in
the US
Triple
Crown
circuit.
Secretaria
t was a
large
chestnut
colt and
the son of
Bold Ruler
out of
Somethingr
oyal. He
was born
at Meadow
Farm in
Caroline
County,
Virginia
and is
owned by
Penny
Chenery.
In his
debut race
on July 4,
1972,
Secretaria
t finished
fourth
– he
had
problem at
the start
and could
not made
the ground
even after
great run.
At three,
he started
off with a
win in the
Bay Shore
Stakes at
Aqueduct.
Despite
his third
position
in the
Wood
Memorial
Stakes to
his stable
mate Angle
Light and
Sham, his
trainer
and owner
were
confident
of his
success in
the
Kentucky
Derby.
Bettors
made
Secretaria
t 3-2
favorite
over Sham
in the
1973
Kentucky
Derby. In
the
Preakness
Stakes,
Secretaria
t broke
last but
made a
huge move
– last
to first
on the
first
turn. In
the
Belmont
Stakes,
only four
horses
joined
Secretaria
t. Before
a crowd of
67,605
Secretaria
t opened a
1/16 miles
lead well
before
finishing
the run.
At the
time of
finishing
the race,
he earned
31 lengths
and ran
the
fastest 1
½ miles
on dirt I
history.
Though he
could not
perform as
brilliant
as he did
in the
Belmont
Stakes, he
continued
to run
impressive
ly after
the Triple
Crown. In
the fall
of 1989,
Secretaria
t was
affected
with
laminitis
– his
condition
failed to
improve
and died
on October
4 at
nineteen.
He was
mourned by
millions
and was
buried at
Claiborne
Farm in
Paris,
Kentucky.
