Shug McGaughey grew up in Lexington, Kentucky; he was the son of a real estate agent. Though he attended the University of Mississipp i, he dropped out in his junior year to work for trainer David Carr. He took out his trainer†™s license in April 1979 and was stabled at Keeneland. From 1982 onward, he started working for owner John Ed Anthony of Loblolly Stable and was named trainer of the Phipps family stable on November 11, 1985. Shug won the Eclipse Award as Outstandin g Trainer in 1988 and became leading trainer by winning in New York in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Shug was honored by the New York Turf Writer’ s Associatio n with the Outstandin g Trainer Award for both 1988 and 1993. He has become the leading trainer at the 1994 Saratoga meeting and also became the leading trainer at the Belmont Park fall championsh ip meeting for three straight years. In 2007, Mcgaughey snatched winning titles in the G2 Comely Stakes with Boca Grande and the G2 Peter Pan with Sightseein g. His stable won thirty nine races in the 2007 racing session.
