He is born into a horse racing family, his parents, Keith and Marilyn Asmussen, are both trainers. He and his spouse, Julie Marie Asmussen, have three sons.

Notes:
Asmussen started his racing career at the tender age of sixteen as a jockey for three years. However, his height and weight ended his riding career. In 1986 he started training American Quarter and Thoroughbr eds Horses in New Mexico. He led in the year 2002 all trainers in Thoroughbr ed flat racing with 407 wins. In the year 2004 he won with 555, crossing the mark of 496 held by Jack Van Berg. His major racing wins include Sport Page Handicap in the year 1996. In the year 2003 he won Saratoga Special Stakes. This was followed by win at Belmont Futurity Stakes in the years 2003 and 2005. Ballerina Handicap was also won in the year 2004. Steven M. Asmussen is the first Laredoan to have a horse winning any of the three legs of the Triple Crown.
