His father Jake Pletcher was a reputed trainer of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses all through the Midwest and California. Jake had his Thoroughbreds training center in Ocala. Todd Plethers wife Tracy, who has utmost interest in horseracing, helps Todd to train horses. They have two sons - Payton and Kyle and a sweet young daughter - Hannah.

Todd Pletcher is a leading American thoroughbr ed horse trainer. He learnt the art of training from his father Jake Pletcher. He opened his own barn with seven horses in December 1995. His Majestic Number brought him first race victory at Gulfstream Park in 1996. He snatched victory at New York Stakes with Jersey Girl in 1997 and registered seven consecutiv e races win including three grade 1 stakes. The Vosburgh and the Cigar Mile brought him winning title in 2001. 2007 Belmont Stakes is memorable for Todd Pletcher. He earned his first win in a Triple Crown race. Rags to Riches became the first filly to win since 1905. He is a 1985 graduate from high school. In the fall of that year he commenced college at the University of Arizona in their Race Track Industry Program. He went on to work as a groom for famous trainer D. Wayne Lukas at Arlington Park near Chicago between his sophomore and junior years. The following summer he spend with legendary Hall of Fame trainer, Charlie Whittingha m, working as a groom at Hollywood Park. In May 1989 he graduated with Bachelor of Animal Science. Immediatel y, he went to New York and worked for D. Wayne Lukas as a foreman. As an assistant trainer from 1991, Todd Pletcher trained Flanders, A Wild Ride, Serenas Song, Harlan and Thunder Gulch. He got hold of his training license in December 1995. In 1996, Majestic Number posted win at Gulfstream Park in Florida. He trained 3 year old filly shado, in 2004 to win Kentucky Oaks and Breeders Cup Distaff.
