Notes: Trainer Christophe Clement is well known for his success with turf runners, but the 48-year-ol d native of France could saddle an American classic winner if Tonalist can spring the upset in the G1 Belmont S. on 6/7 at Belmont Park. The son of Tapit began his career with a 4 th -place finish in a 1m Aqueduct maiden race last November then returned in mid-Januar y to get his picture taken after a four-lengt h romp against non-winner s in a 1 1/8m contest at Gulfstream Park. In his next start, a 1 1/16m allowance at Gulfstream on 2/22, he was best of the rest behind subsequent G1 Florida Derby winner Constituti on. Tonalist was pointed to the G1 Wood Memorial S. in early April but was sidelined by a lung infection. With that ailment behind him, Clement entered his charge in the G2 Peter Pan S. on 5/10 at Belmont Park to prepare for that track's signature race. In his first try over a sloppy (sealed) surface, the colt made an early move up the backstretc h under Joel Rosario, took command and splashed away from six overmatche d rivals for another four-lengt h score. Tonalist covered the 1 1/8m distance in 1:48.30 and was awarded a 107 BRIS Speed Rating, 14 points higher than the 93 he earned in both of his prior 2014 starts. The bay was bred in Kentucky by Woodslane Farm. He is out of Settling Mist, a daughter of Pleasant Colony, and was foaled on February 11, 2011. Tonalist failed to meet his $195,000 reserve when offered at the 2012 Fasig-Tipt on Saratoga Yearling Sale and was ultimately purchased privately by Robert S. Evans. The winner's share of the $200,000 Peter Pan boosted the colt's bankroll to $157,000. Clement said Tonalist would likely have two works before he races in the $1,500,000 Belmont S. next month.
