Belmont Park's traditional prep for the final jewel in the Triple Crown has a competitive field of 11, and all but two are eligible for the classics. Fear the Kitten lands in this spot after being excluded from the Kentucky Derby as an also-eligible. His connections initially targeted the G2 Preakness on 5/18 but opted for this softer spot. Sunland Derby 3 rd -place finisher Abraham exits a non-threatening 4 th in the G3 Illinois Derby behind Preakness contender Departing. Narveaz also failed to hit the board in the in Illinois but put in a big effort when 4 th to Kentucky Derby champ Orb in the G1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. G3 Bay Shore hero Declan's Warrior stretches out for the 1 st time after being patiently conditioned by Hall of Famer Zito, whose wife is the owner/breeder. Freedom Child impressed when breaking his maiden at Gulfstream in March then missed his shot to run for the roses when interference from the gate crew caused him to be declared a non-starter in the G1 Wood Memorial last month. My Name Is Michael returns to dirt over which he ran 3 rd in his only try, the G3 Sam Davis S. at Tampa Bay Downs on 2/2. Battier, a restricted stakes winner last out, makes his 1 st start for trainer Todd Pletcher following a private purchase. Incognito enters off consecutive wins and couldn't have been more impressive when overcoming trouble to get up in time last out. Saint Vigeur also goes for his 3 rd straight victory and took his last over an off track, which he may well face again here. Recent Euro import Infinite Magic makes his 1 st start on dirt, adds Lasix for the 1 st time and gets has a different trainer for the 3 rd time in as many starts. Go Get the Basil, who is the other non-Triple Crown nominee in the field along with Battier, showed nothing in the Wood and will have to step up his game to compete with these. In its 53rd year in 2006, Peter Pan Stakes was run in honor of a colt born in 1906. Peter Pan was 1907's champion three-year-old male and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1956. This stakes is for thoroughbred horses with age three years olds, which can run at a distance of nine furlongs on the dirt track of Belmont Park. The Peter Pan stakes carries a purse of $200,000 and is a grade II event.
